Wetsuit Technology Is Getting Very Interesting
One of the biggest problems with diving or any other water sport such as kayaking or surfing is maintaining body temperature in cold water. Without some form of water compatible insulation most ocean or lake water will quickly take body heat right out of you.
With huge improvements in technology over the past 5 years wetsuits have made great strides in functionality. As this technology advanced so did the various options of different coloured wetsuits become available, so much so that people really started making fashion statements with brands such as Quicksilver wetsuits and Billabong wetsuits leading the way.
Wetsuits are no longer made out of black rubber but neoprene which is found in all modern wetsuit, this material is used because it has a unique attribute of heating up the body by storing some water inside the material. Of these technological breakthroughs in the surf wetsuit, there have been three main areas or possibilities that have emerged, including the solar panel heating, gel based heating and battery powered heating panels.
Rip Curl wetsuits have been pioneers in heated wetsuits. A new product just launched by Rip Curl called the H-Bomb is aimed to take the wetsuit market by storm. The wetsuit has a thickness of 3/2 millimetres and a special heated panel that runs down your spine. Just the thing you need in cold waters to keep the chill off. This will mean surfers, wakeboarders and divers are going to be able to stay longer in water without any risk.
These developments really prove how far the surfing wetsuit has come since the initial proposals that were made to the US navy for diving suits. And this fact together with the added functionality that has come about allows people to really enjoy their surfing throughout the year both in warm water and colder water conditions.
