Diving The Great Barrier Reef Off Cairns, Queensland, Australia

August 21st, 2010 | admin | Scuba Gear

I’m here in Cairns Australia and what else to do there than scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef? I guess as long as I’m in the largest coral reef in the world I may as well explore a small section of it in detail. The day I arrived I booked a four day diving trip which includes 12 dives (2 of which were night dives) , with all catering included. The dive company was called Cairns Dive Centre.

We departed the reef two days later. The dive boat was big and spacious and I even got my own ensuite room, which was perfect for drying off after each dive. The truth is that it was pretty full on. The order of the day was - rise at 6:30 and dive , have breakfast , scuba , have lunch , scuba , have cake , dive , have dinner , scuba dive , bed. Life was reduced to that of a gold fish , just swimming and eating which was exactly what I was looking for}. I believe now that sea sickness tablets are more valuable than birth control tablets in the great order of things. Women have been breeding since the dawn of time but only recently have people been afloat on a bobbing, bouncing , motor driven boat in the great seas of the planet. In other words , thank GOD I brought seasick tablets because the sea was ultra rough and they were my magic wand.

The dives were great and the things I witnessed were pretty amazing. I saw everything from giant grouper to hammerhead sharks and heaps of colourful coral and cute fish just swimming everywhere. Because of the popular animation ‘Finding Nemo’ the fish of the great barrier reef have been christened new monikers. When you return from a dive you saw Nemo instead of a Clownfish. Blowing bubbles though is incredible , it’s an alien world undeer the surface and being weightless is a strange experience. Now I can safely say that I feel confident scuba diving , equalizing my ears is childs play so I know that I am able to start scuba diving in other places in the world.
The staff were really fun and entertaining as well. We had a briefing prior to each dive and after the dive we all complied our log books with the details of the dives.  Luckily , the catering was the best I’ve {seen~food was the best I’ve eaten} so far on this whole trip. On the Menu was avocado and Indian food , and good bread and tropical fruit. It was definitely value for money , that’s for sure.

I think that if you don’t try  scuba diving when you holiday in Cairns it’s like visiting Paris and not looking at the Eifel Tower, In other words, its a must see.
