Better Your Diving Experience With A Compact LED Dive Torch

July 3rd, 2010 | admin | Scuba Gear

As a diving newbie, it is important that you’re equipped with all the right diving gear to make most of the underwater experience. The majority will remember the essential gear but may miss out on little things like marking their gear with fluorescing tape or carrying a flashlight. A compact LED dive torch (or flashlight) is a must-have to truly have the capacity to explore.

If you are on a night-dive and want to keep it natural, it is still better to carry a flashlight and not put it to use than not carry one at all. It is strongly recommended on wreck exploring trips and definitely recommended for amateurs. It obviously has to be water-proof with new or fully charged cells to prevent any sudden blackouts when down there.

The corals and aquatic plants provide a lot of dark hiding places for tiny fish that you could miss when not using a torch. When flashing light on fish and other animals do not scare them with direct strong light but attempt to keep it a few feet away. Else you may find everything swimming away from you. You do not want that to happen.

When going for a dive at night or into murky water, take a fully charged dive torch and a pocket flashlight as backup and make sure they are secured to your body or suit to avoid losing them. Although it is okay to use artificial light underwater, make sure you do not disturb the marine animals or other divers. And definitely avoid flashing light into anybody’s eyes.

There are some diving etiquette regarding use of light underwater. Directing a strong beam of light into a diver’s eyes is normally avoided for it could take them a while to be able to see. Aquatic animals may not enjoy the light and may try to swim away. So, it has to be used judiciously.

It is highly recommended that diving be done in teams or at least pairs for safety purposes. It is also usually suggested to keep the partner/s in sight. If you happen to lose track of a partner, you can switch off you flashlight and look for the beam of light from your partner’s torch.

Follow each of the standard diving procedures and instructions. Play it by the rules and your trip will certainly be a huge success! Finally, keep it safe, for yourself and the environment.
